Mission, Goals & Learning Outcomes

Mission Statement: To support and guide new students as they successfully transition to college life at Aims Community College and to help them to develop skills and strategies to achieve their academic and career goals.

Catalog Description
Advancing Academic Achievement (AAA) offers a course to help students grow as learners by gaining knowledge, skills and confidence related to their personal and academic success. The department works in conjunction with the Center for the First Year Experience program towards a shared mission to create and sustain an environment that supports a successful academic and social transition of students into Aims Community College.

Program Goals
  • Demonstrate elements of problem solving:
    • Adapt reading, note-taking, memory/learning strategies for various courses/disciplines encountered.
    • Determine effective strategies for motivation and time management as needed for classes and throughout the semester.
    • Navigate appropriate college services, resources and policies proactively and when needs arise.
    • Create an academic and career plan to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrate elements of critical thinking
    • Engage in reflective thinking and expression in regards to course topics including mindset, motivation, personality and values.
Program Student Learning Outcomes (PLSOs)
  • Identify resources for academic support and college policies and know how to access them.
  • Demonstrate understanding and apply techniques for improved time management and academic skills (reading, note-taking, studying, memory and test-taking).
  • Examine their mindset and motivation to increase self-efficacy.
  • Identify academic and career goals to make an educational plan.
