Goals 2014-2015

1.Create and pilot a new section of CTE infused AAA courses for Protective Services Challenge: The challenge will be to implement the tailored curriculum to achieve greater retention and higher GPA’s for the enrolled students Opportunity:  The opportunity is more career actualization for students and a narrowed curricular focus.

  • Part time instructor Ray Cook developed a tailored curriculum for the AAA Protective Services class with input from Sue Beecher and Randy Souther during summer 2014.  The course was taught by Ray Fall 2014 with eleven students enrolled.  A pre and post assessment were completed by seven students.   Preliminary results from the post assessment indicate positive results.  For example 100% of students agreed or strongly agreed that they learned skills for their intended profession.  The pre and post assessments for all CTE infused AAA courses will be evaluated to see if the model leads to greater gains by students.

2.Implement AAA 090 career curriculum from the AQIP project - Helping Students Learn, Creating a Seamless and Intentional Career Engagement Continuum: Awareness to Career Choice in all AAA 090 classes starting Fall 2014. [KPI: Assess growth through pre/post assessment] Challenge:  A challenge is the logistics coordinating the career assessment workshops for AQIP project in each AAA 090 class Opportunity: The opportunity is to help students set or confirm career goals increasing their motivation and retaining them at higher rates.

  • A full pilot of new career curriculum from the AQIP project was implemented in all AAA 090 classes offered Fall 2014.  The new curriculum included two weeks of content focused on career awareness, planning and research, and a career research essay.   The unit included a video created for AAA 090 as part of the AQIP project which followed a current Aims student conducting various informational interviews with the purpose of helping students understand the career planning process.  Paula Yanish, Allan Obert, Randy Morris, and Hollie Kopp attended a training on True Colors, a personality assessment, in July 2014 and facilitated workshops in every AAA 090 class to connect their True Colors personality assessment with possible career paths.  Additionally, the Keifer librarians presented on library and internet resources for researching careers.
  • Pre/Post data reveal that the career unit had a positive impact on student growth.  For example:
    • On a pretest, 53% of students agreed or strongly agreed that they know the career path they want to pursue (n=501) whereas 58% agreed or strongly agreed to the same item on the posttest (n=265).
    • On a pretest 58% of students agreed or strongly agreed that they know and appreciate their career values (n=501) whereas 69% agreed or strongly agreed to the same item on the posttest (n=265).
    • On a pretest 44% of students agreed or strongly agreed that they know and can articulate their career interests (n=501) whereas 62% agreed or strongly agreed to the same item on the posttest (n=265).
    • On a pretest 40% of students agreed or strong agreed that they have researched their career they are perusing (n=501) whereas 63% agreed or strongly agreed to the same item on the posttest (n=265).
    • On a pretest 36% of students agree or strongly agree that they understand the qualifications and experiences needed in order to be competitive in their intended career (n=501) whereas 60% agreed or strongly agreed to the same item on the posttest (n=265).
  • The logistics of coordinating the True Colors workshops and library presentations did create a challenge.  Based on instructor and presenter feedback from Fall 2014, changes to the timing of the presentations/workshops during the semester, location of the library presentations, and scheduling of the True Colors workshops will occur for Spring 2015.

3. Iplement AAA 090 curriculum changes focused on intentional student learning outcomes (academic habits and personal responsibility) in line with the new institutional learning outcomes. [KPI: Assess growth through pre/post assessment] Challenge:  The challenge will be to determine if these outcomes are being achieved and/or determining if they are congruent for the AAA program goals Opportunity:  The opportunity is to have specific data to make future decisions about curriculum changes

  • Intentional learning objectives were developed for each unit.  These learning objectives guided the creation of an instructional guide including unit outlines to direct lesson planning.  Specific assignments were updated/changed to improve student learning goals including a new “game plan assignment” to have students create summarized sheets of class policies from course syllabi and set SMART goals, a mindset essay for students to process their understanding of fixed/growth mindset, three reading mastery study sheets for students to practice SQ3R and annotation, and a True Colors assignments to practice creating a mind map.

#4 Revamp the existing pre/post survey into a diagnostic and summative assessment of learning outcomes created in Campus Labs Challenge:  The challenge will be to determine if AAA 090 is achieving the learning outcomes and making changes to reflect what we learn from the data Opportunity:  The opportunity is the ability to quantify and celebrate the success of specific learning outcomes which are priorities for the division and institution.

  • A new pre/post survey was developed based on AAA learning objectives.  The assessment is comprehensive with 46 questions.  The results from Fall 2014 will be evaluated and changes considered by the newly formed AAA Assessment team.  In addition to the pre and post assessment, multiple focus groups were held in November with current AAA students to provide additional qualitative data to assess how the curriculum is achieving the learning outcomes and ways to improve.
