Linked Classes
Overview
A new model of "linking" AAA 090 with another required development/college prep class was developed Spring 2015 to create a "community of learners" across two classes. It adapts a best practice of learning communities for first year experience courses. The benefits of the model are proposed to be increased community and connections that students can make with each other within a student cohort as well as study groups formed. AAA 090 content can be adapted to the linked developmental course to increase course completion.
A linked AAA 090 and MAT 050 is being piloted Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 with 19 students (AAA 090 Instructor - Rachel Veretto, MAT 050 Instructor - Ron Lewis & Peer Coach - Dawn Bolton)
Description
Linked AAA courses have the same general content of traditional AAA classes, but are taught by an instructor who adapts and responds to the course content in the linked developmental course. An embedded peer coach that has taken both classes previously attends both sections for continuity and ability to support students.
Assessment
Course completion for MAT/AAA, positive effect on GPA, persistence, and math progression will be evaluated. Summary of Results: First cohort (Fall 2015)
- 89% (17 out of 19 students) passed MAT 050 with a C or better
- 100% passed AAA 090 with a C or better
*Comparison: The % of students reported to complete remedial math with a C or better for 2013 is 66% (2-22 Strategy Council Meeting Packet) and the completion rate of AAA 090 is 67.51% (2011-2014).
