AAA Human Services
Description
This course is designed for students intending to pursue careers related to families and human needs such as social workers, counselors, psychologists and non-profit sectors. Topics include goal-setting, time management,
textbook reading strategies, note-taking, test-taking, listening techniques,
concentration and memory devices, stress management and critical thinking for
student success. Three credits.
The common curriculum of AAA 090 will be themed adding relevant activities, special readings and videos. Other highlights include:
- Professionalism/Networking
- Self Care (i.e. very important for folks in this line of work)
- Professional panels (i.e. social work, private practice, community mental health, non-profit, art/music therapists, hospice)
- Campus Involvement (i.e. peer educator & programming, advising work study, QPR, helping hands club, etc.)
- Off-campus Involvement (i.e. SESS, SAVA, etc.)
- Careers (i.e. Community Mental Health Counselor, Inpatient/Severe & Persistent Mental Illness, Developmental Disabilities, Marriage and Family Therapist, Child Therapist/Abuse, Criminal Justice Therapist/SO, Social Worker, Crisis Counselor/Rape/Suicide, Psychologist-Private Practice, Case Manager, Career Counselor, Addictions Counselor, Hospice/Medical Setting, Art/Music/Equine Therapists, School Counselor/Interventionist, Non Profit Organizations, Rehabilitation Counselor, Workforce Development.)
- Academic Planning (i.e. Masters level careers/programs, Bachelors level careers/programs, Certificate level careers/programs)
Assessment/Evaluation
- Students who complete this themed course can be compared to students who complete general AAA sections. Sections can be compared in terms of completion of AAA 090, GPA in the course and learning gains (pre/post assessment).
