Note-taking Assessment Project

Overview:  During the Spring 2016 semester, AAA 090 classes will be participating in a summative department assessment project 

Description of Assessment Project: Students will take Cornell notes on a video of a college level lecture after receiving instruction in their AAA courses.  Instructors will submit a copy of the notes to a non-instructor staff in our department who will remove any names.  A random selection from each class will be assessed with a common rubric and scored.


Research Question: After exposure to using the Cornell notes system, are AAA students able to capture 70% of main and supporting details from a college level lecture?

 

Data Collection Procedure:

 

Administering

1)    Provide each instructor with instruction sheet and enough Cornell Note template paper for each person in each class they are teaching spring 2016.

2)    All instructor will show the same lecture video, in its entirety, to the students who are present.

3)    Students will be given 20 minutes to write their questions and summary.

 

Collection

1)    Collect all copies of student notes from each class being offered spring 2016.

2)    Keep notes separated by class & instructor.

 

Randomization

1)    Develop a spreadsheet that includes:

a.    Student name

b.    Instructor

c.    CRN

2)    Generate numerical codes for each student

3)    Randomization process to select 20%  of the samples per course (determined by CRN)

4)    Pull out selected notes

5)    Print labels w/ code only & affix labels to notes.

 

Assessment

1)    Provide each assessor with a master note rubric and scoring sheet.AAA Assessment Project Rubric Scoring Sheet_2015-2016.xlsx

2)    Assessors will review each sample using rubric provided.

3)    When all assessors have reviewed all samples, then scoring sheets, rubrics and samples will be turned into the assessment team chair.

 

Data Entry

1)    Assessment team chair will enter in all scores into the spreadsheet for each category.

2)    Scores will be verified by 2nd person for accuracy.

3)    Scores from each assessors will be averaged to provide a rating for each category.

 

Criteria for Success for Students: After receiving instruction in their AAA course, students should be able to produce Cornell Lecture notes that contain at least 70% of the main ideas and 70% of the supporting details on a college level lecture.
